The son of John and Florence, of 23 Dumaresq Street, St Helier. After joining the Jersey Company he left the island for training in Ireland. In August 1915, however, as 7th Royal Irish Rifles prepared to leave for Aldershot he transferred along with a number of other to 3rd Royal Irish Royals to serve a 'Home Service Man'. Presumably deemed unsuitable for active service, he did not rejoin the Jersey Company and may have remained on garrison duty for the rest of the war, although some records suggest he may have served in the Conaught Rangers.
