The son of Mrs Banks, of Old Street, St Helier. His brother William also served with the Jersey Company. Known as 'Bob', following training in Ireland, he moved to Aldershot in September 1915 with the rest of the Jersey Company. In November that year he took part in a wrestling match. After travelling to the front in December 1916, he undertook a course in tunnelling in March the following year. Wounded in April 1916 while serving as a stretcher bearer, he was subsequently evacuated to hospital for treatment. After returning to the front in January 1917, he served through 1917 until wounded during the fighting at Frezenberg in August. As a result, he transferred to the Labour Corps, presumably as no longer fit for active service. Nevertheless, he was reportedly wounded for a third time in January 1918 while serving in the Labour Corps.
