The
son of Philip and Marriane, of Newgate Street, St Helier. His brother
William who served with the Hampshire Regiment during the war was killed
in 1918.
After training in Ireland and Aldershot he went to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. Wounded in June the following year, he was evacuated to a hospital in Edinburgh for treatment. Returning to active service in 1917, he served through the year and transferred in January 1918 to 2nd Hampshire Regiment along with most other remaining Jersey Company members. In July that year he was wounded in the shoulder, arm, and leg, and gassed. Evacuated for treatment, he may not have returned to duty before the war ended. After the war he appears to have remained, or rejoined, the Army, serving with the Devonshire Regiment. In August 1924, he returned to Belgium and France as part of an official Jersey Company party attending the unveiling of memorials to the 16th (Irish) Division.
