The son of Charles and Mary Jane, of Mount Billot, Trinity. Prior to the war he worked for a newspaper. His brother Thomas, who served in the Canadian Army, was killed in 1916.

After training in Ireland and Aldershot, he went to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. Served through 1916 until killed in action on 6 September during the fighting at Guillemont.
