The stepson of Matthieu and Marie Gionta, of Millais, St Ouen. Their son, Joseph Gionta, also served in the Jersey Company. He trained in Ireland and Aldershot before going to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. In March the following year, he attended courses on bombing (hand grenades) and sniping. At some point in 1916, he was wounded and evacuated for treatment. Whether he returned to active service with the Jersey Company is unclear, but later in the war, or possibly post-war, he may have joined the Queen's Regiment.
