The son of Mrs Bliault of Duhamel Place, St Helier, he was brought up in the Jersey Orphan's House. Prior to the war, he was married and living at 4 La Motte Street, St Helier.

After completing training in Ireland and Aldershot he went to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. In March the following year he attended a course in bombing (hand grenades). Wounded in the leg and side in August 1916, he was evacuated to Ipswich Hospital and remained under treatment into 1917. Possibly in February or April, he returned to the front with the Jersey Company and transferred with most other remaining members to 2nd Hampshire Regiment in January 1918. In April that year, during the fighting near Bailleul, he was again wounded. After treatment at Huddersfield War Hospital he may have returned to active service before the war ended.

Demobilised from the Army in March 1919. In the years immediately following the war he lived at 9 States Cottages, St Helier.
