The son of Francis and Clara, of Beaulieu, St Clement and later of Royal Villas, Beach Road, St Helier.

Trained in Ireland and Aldershot with the Jersey Company before going to the front in December 1915. Served through 1916 and into 1917. Captured in a German raid on the Jersey Company's trenches in March 1917. Transported to Germany, he remained a prisoner of war until the end of the conflict, finally returning home at the end of December 1918.

After the war he re-enlisted in the Army, serving with the Hampshire Regiment.
