The son of Francis and Harriett of Les Vaux, St Brelade.

After training in Ireland and Aldershot he went to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. In March 1916 he undertook a training course as a Guide. In September that year he was wounded in the fighting at Guillemont and Ginchy and evacuated for treatment at the Third Western Hospital in Cardiff. He may not have returned to active service with the Jersey Company following this but did later serve in the Royal Flying Corps.

In 1941, he was present in Jersey at the funeral of the former commander of the Jersey Company, Colonel Stocker.
