The grandson of Edward and Jane Sarre, he was living with the in 1901, aged 8, at Samares Lane, St Clement.

In 1916 he trained and served as a signaller in the 7th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. After being wounded in the fighting at Guillemont and Ginchy in September 1916 he was treated at the Edmonton Hospital, London. Returning to active service some time in 1917 he transferred to 2nd Battalion, Hampshire Regiment in January 1918 along with the rest of the Jersey Company. While serving with that unit, on the night of 12 / 13 August 1918 he was awarded the Military Medal for his actions when, under heavy fire, he volunteered to go out and repair the lines of communication back to headquarters. Demobilised from the Army in March 1919.
