The son of John and Jane, of Rock Hurst Cottage, Grouville. Prior to the war, he lived in Devonshire Lane, St Helier and worked as a gardener.

In October 1915, he passed a course to become a First Class Signaller, and served in the Signal Section of 7th Royal Irish Rifles. In November 1917, he fell ill with exposure and was evacuated for treatment in England. Six months later, in June 1918, he was discharged from the Army on health grounds.
