The son
of Francis and Clara, of Ann Street, St Helier. In 1915, he was living
at Greve D'Azette, St Helier and working as a grocer for Ovriss.
In May 1916, while serving in the trenches, he had a lucky escape when his bible deflected a German sniper's bullet. In February 1917, he was admitted to hospital suffering from influenza and frost bite. Returning to duty, he was wounded in the arm at Frezenberg in August that year and evacuated for treatment in Herne Bay, England. The remainder of the war was passed in Ireland with the Depot Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles before being discharged from the Army in November 1918.
