The son
of Ann, of St John. Prior to the war, he was married with children to
Alvina, and worked as a shoemaker.
Known as 'Chas', in March 1916 he fell ill while serving at the front was was evacuated to Bagthorpe Military Hospital in Nottingham. Moved to Victoria Barracks Hospital in Belfast by June 1916, on the following month he was discharged from the Army due to his condition.
