The
son of Philip and Jane, of New Street, St Helier. Prior to the war he
lived in Pier Road, St Helier, and worked as a labourer.
After completing training in Ireland and Aldershot he did not go to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. Instead, perhaps on account of his age or a medical condition, he transferred to 5th Royal Irish Rifles, a home service battalion stationed in Ireland. Discharged from the Army in December 1916 as no longer physically fit for military service due to arthritis.
