Family
background uncertain.
Known as 'Jack', he trained as a signaller in 1915 passing a course as First Class in October 1915. Attached to the Signal Section of 7th Royal Irish Rifles, he won the Signaller Cycling Race in April 1916. In August 1917 he won a Military Medal for service during the fighting at Frezenberg. In December 1918 he transferred with the rest of the Jersey Company to 2nd Hampshire Regiment and served with that unit through 1918. Discharged from the Army in April 1919.
