Family
background uncertain.
Known as 'Bert', while in Ireland he spend time in the role of Company Clerk. By September 1916, he had been promoted to the Company Quarter Master Sergeant for the Jersey Company. By the end of that year he had left to train as an officer, but in 1917, having apparently not been accepted, he returned to the Jersey Company. In January 1918 he transferred to 2nd Hampshire Regiment along with the rest of the Jersey Company.
