First World War.
Called 'Fred', after training in Ireland and Aldershot he went to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. Promoted to Lance-Sergeant, he served through 1916 until September. Badly wounded in that month during the fighting at Guillemont and Ginchy and evacuated for treatment at the Ninian Park Hospital in Cardiff. Having lost an arm, he was left unfit for military service and discharged from the Army in May 1917. One of the founding committee
members of the Contingent Association, immediately after the war he
lived at Bon Air, St Saviour.
