Family
background uncertain. At the time of joining the Army he was living
at Gorey Pier, Grouville, and working as a labourer. Married Agnes in
March 1918.
While in Ireland, he started training as a Signaller, and then in Aldershot qualified as a First Class Signaller. Serving as part of the Signalling Section of 7th Royal Irish Rifles, he went to the front with the Jersey Company in December 1915. Wounded in July 1916, he was evacuated to the UK for treatment. He did not return to active service until May 1918, when he rejoined the Royal Irish Rifles rather than the Hampshire Regiment along with most other remaining Jersey Company members. Captured and made prisoner of war in October that year, he was repatriated at the end of the following month. Demobilised from the Army in March 1919.
