The nephew of Joseph and Elizabeth De La Motte, in 1901 he lived with them in St Peter Port, Guernsey. In March 1916 he under a trench mortar training course, and appears subsequently to have transferred to the Trench Mortar Battery of the 48th Infantry Brigade. He continued to serve with this unit through 1917 and 1918, winning three Divisional Parchment Certificates for bravery and promotion to Lance-Corporal.
