The son
of William and Amelia, of Great Union Road, St Helier. At the time of
joining the Army, he worked for Orviss.
Known as 'Bert, he untertook a number of training courses in 1915 and early 1916, including engineering, artificial respiration, and sniping. Wounded in June 1916 and then again in September during the fighting at Guillemont and Ginchy. Back at the front by early 1917, he was wounded again in August that year during the fighting at Frezenberg. He remained with the Royal Irish Rifles into 1918, by this time with the rank of Lance-Corporal. Wounded for a third time in October 1918. After the war, he was one of the founding members of the Jersey Contingent Association.
